Today presented by the New York Road Runners, the Millrose Games came to the Armory in 2012 after nearly 100 years at Madison Square Garden. The competition launched back in 1908, the impetus of the Millrose Athletic Association, a club formed by employees at the Wanamaker’s department store. That legacy lives on in the name of the competition—Millrose was owner Rodman Wanamaker’s summer home—and in one of its signature events, the Wanamaker Mile.

More than 200 champions of the Millrose Games have also come out on top at the Olympics. This year’s competition features a slew of notable Olympians: for example, the sprinter Tori Bowie, who earned a silver medal in the 100-meter dash at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and reigns as defending world champion; Nia Ali, a fellow Rio silver medalist in the 100m hurdles; and New Zealand’s Nick Willis, who earned silver in the 1,500 meter at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and bronze at the Rio Games.
