Dominican Film Festival in New York City
Come join us at the Edge Hotel for the 7th annual Dominican Film Festival New York, a fantastic celebration of vital and vibrant filmmaking—not to mention international awareness and the cultural diversity that makes the Big Apple (and the country as a whole) so special.
Call the Edge Hotel your Manhattan home away from home during the festival, and you’ll be literally mere minutes from one of the festival’s primary venues—the United Palace Theater on Broadway—and also within convenient reach of the others.
The 2018 Dominican Film Festival
The festival takes place Tuesday, July 24th through Sunday, July 29th at several locations around Manhattan: besides the United Palace, also AMC Empire 25 (234 W 42nd St.), the Armory Foundation’s Hall of Fame Theater (216 Fort Washington Ave), Comisionado Dominicano de Cultura (541 W 145th St), and the Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center (530 W 166th St.).
On offer will be nearly 90 films—shorts, feature-length narratives, documentaries, and more—as well as 60-plus filmmakers and actors participating in panels, Q&As, and master classes. Both established and up-and-coming Dominican filmmakers will be spotlighted, as will members of the Latino Diaspora in the United States.
Opening & Closing Night Films
The festival kicks off at 8 PM on July 24th with Francis “Indo” Disla’s El Fantasma De Mi Novia (My Girlfriend’s Ghost)—about the footloose spirit of a coma-stricken woman—at the United Palace Theater and concludes with Archie Lopez’s Hermanos, the comic saga of a thief who assumes his twin brother’s identity, at 89 PM on the 29th at AMC Empire 25.
Some of the Festival Highlights
Highlights of this year’s Dominican Film Festival include a retrospective on Dominican-American actor (and Washington Heights resident) Manny Perez’s work; an acting master class by Hector Anibal on Friday, July 27th; and a tribute to the late director Fernando Baez.
