The Fort Washington Armory & the New Balance Track & Field Center

The Fort Washington Armory (often just called “The Armory”) was built in 1911, housing local state military units and the National Guard before becoming a homeless shelter in the 1980s.

The Armory—on the National Register of Historic Places—has since been transformed into a national (and international) hub of track-and-field athletics, hosting better than 220,000 athletes (and some 300,000 visitors) every year for competitions, training camps, and other events at every level of the sport. Among the prestigious annual competitions that go down here are the Millrose Games, which moved to The Armory in 2012 after close to a century at Madison Square Garden, and the New Balance Games.

Upcoming Events at Armory Track

As always, there’s quite the busy schedule at the Fort Washington Armory’s New Balance Track & Field Center. On Saturday, October 19th, there’s the Rising New York Road Runners Youth Open/Jamboree, open to Stage 1 (2- to 11-year-olds) and Stage 2 (8- to 18-year-olds) participants and everything from sprints, shot put, and long jump to obstacle courses and dancing.

On Saturday, November 16th, high-school athletes get to participate in the Fall 2019 Armory Indoor Track & Field Camp, which’ll feature some outstanding coaches and professional track-and-field competitors. Sunday, December 1st sees The Armory host the PSAL Gobbler Classic, while the Jim Mitchell Invitational takes place on Saturday, December 14th.

The National Track & Field Hall of Fame at the Fort Washington Armory

The Armory also houses the National Track & Field Hall of Fame, a museum that’ll appeal to both track-and-field devotees and more general-purpose sports fans as well. Spread across three floors, its exhibits include a floor map of the New York City Marathon, memorabilia of such stars as Steve Prefontaine, and the grand wall displaying the names of those inducted into the Hall of Fame itself.
